 TAG Activities & Competitions

 

 

Chess and Backgammon: If you enjoy playing chess or backgammon, and want to meet new friends at Challenger who share the same interest, you may want to consider joining this activity. It will begin in the spring semester, and will meet once a week in room 106 from 3:00 – 4:15.

 

Strategic Board Games Activity: If you enjoy playing board games of strategy, and want to meet new friends at Challenger who share the same interest, plan to attend Strategic Games after school on Mondays from 3:00 to 4:15, and will continue each Monday thereafter. Strategic Games begins in September and continues through April. Come and play: “Risk,” “Sequence,”  “Ingenious,” “Monopoly,” and “Labyrinth.” Ask your son or daughter if they want to come join the fun after school on Monday in room 106.

 

Brain Bowl Competition: Challenger has several teams in the 6th 7th and 8th grades compete in the Optimist Brain Bowl Competition. It is a fast paced “game-show” competition requiring quick thinking and reflexes. Teams are formed in December and practices are once a week after school from 3:00 – 4:15 through February.

 

Legislative Day: Legislative Day takes place at the Capitol in Denver. It is held each year in February. Talented and Gifted eighth students from Challenger, in conjunction with Pine Creek High School Talented and Gifted students, are given the opportunity to participate in this exciting day. The students have the chance to visit both floors of the house, attend session meetings, and have a luncheon with several state legislators. TAG Students are selected for this activity by the Challenger TAG teacher, together with the eighth grade Social Studies teachers.

 

Mario and Iris: A unique opportunity for eighth grade Talented and Gifted boys and girls at Challenger. Iris, the girls mentor group, meets six time a year, and Mario, the boys mentor group meets six times a year, to discuss a variety of issues that talented and gifted students face as they transition from middle school to high school. The interaction among the Talented and Gifted students at Pine Creek High School and Challenger Middle School creates a smooth transition to high school and is coordinated by the PCHS and CMS TAG Teachers. All talented and gifted eight grade students at Challenger will be invited to participate.

 

Shutter Bugs: The 6th grade photography class teaches 6th grade Talented and Gifted students how to use a basic digital camera, frame a picture, the rule of thirds, types of lighting, foreground, background, and more. Shutter Bugs begins in the spring and meets once a week after school in room 106 from 3:00 – 4:30.  

 

Girls’ STEM Program at UCCS (Giving Girls Roots in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math): This one day program introduces Talented and Gifted eight grade girls to the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math fields (STEM), to encourage them to pursue higher education STEM fields in college and beyond. Eight grade talented and gifted girls are selected for this activity by the Challenger TAG teacher, together with the eighth grade science and math teachers.

                                                   

Bridge Card Game Activity: The Bridge card game activity introduces students to the strategic card game of Bridge. It will be an introduction of the aspects of the game, including the intricacies of the bidding process, and will provide opportunities for the students to play rounds of bridge as they learn the card game. Talented and Gifted students who want to learn the game, and those who already know how to play but who would like to imprve their skills, are encouraged to join this TAG activity. It will begin in the spring semester, and will meet once a week in room 106 from 3:00 – 4:15.
